Step-by-step: confirm drift, don't just glance at it
- Let go completely. Rest your hands off the controller entirely, not just off that one stick — some pads pick up faint vibration through the housing from a hand resting elsewhere.
- Wait a full two or three seconds. The dot needs a moment to settle, and the drift flag itself only evaluates once the stick has been still for close to a second — don't judge the first instant after you let go.
- Read the X/Y numbers, not just the dot. A dot that looks "close enough" to centre by eye might still read 0.08/0.05 — worth knowing even below this tool's drift-flag threshold, since it tells you the trend before it gets bad enough to flag.
- Move the stick through its full range in a slow circle, then let go again and recheck. Real drift is reproducible across repeated rest periods; a one-off reading during the settling wobble is not.
- Test the other stick too. Drift is very often one stick and not the other — see the FAQ below on why that's the normal pattern, not a red flag on its own.
- Compare connections if your pad supports more than one. A stick reading shouldn't meaningfully change between USB and Bluetooth; if it does, that points at the connection rather than the stick itself.
Reading the stick display
- The bright dot is the stick's current live position. Centre of the circle is (0, 0); the edge is the maximum reading in that direction, roughly ±1.0.
- The dim ring marker is the stick's most recent resting position — captured once the stick has gone still for close to a second. On a healthy stick this sits essentially on top of the centre crosshair. A gap between the dim marker and true centre is exactly what drift looks like.
- Magnitude is the straight-line distance from centre, combining X and Y into one number — useful for a quick "is it basically zero" check without reading two separate values.
- The "possible drift" badge appears only once the stick has been still for a moment and the magnitude is still above a small threshold. It won't fire while you're actively moving the stick, and it clears the moment the reading settles back near zero.
No deadzone is applied here. Games and drivers typically ignore a small radius around centre so minor drift doesn't affect play. This page deliberately shows the raw, unfiltered value instead, so you can catch drift before it grows large enough to escape a game's deadzone.

What actually causes stick drift?
Most analog sticks measure position with either a potentiometer (a resistive track a wiper slides across) or, on newer/premium pads, a Hall-effect sensor (a magnet whose field a fixed sensor reads with no physical contact). Potentiometer contacts wear down with repeated use, and dust or moisture can build up on the resistive track, both of which shift the reading the electronics get at what should be centre. Hall-effect sticks are marketed as resistant to this specific wear mechanism because nothing physically rubs together — though they can still drift from a magnet shifting in its housing or from other component ageing.
Can I fix drift myself, or does it need a repair?
It depends on the cause. Debris-related drift sometimes clears up with careful cleaning around the base of the stick (isopropyl alcohol and a soft brush, with the controller powered off), and a few controllers expose a stick recalibration option in their platform or vendor settings that can compensate for a small offset. Physically worn potentiometer contacts, though, are a mechanical problem — recalibration can hide a small drift by redefining what the software calls “centre,” but it doesn't restore the worn part, and drift from real wear typically gets worse over time rather than better.
Why does the dot look like it's drifting slightly even right after I let go?
