What "chatter" means and why it happens
A mechanical mouse switch is a small metal leaf spring that bends to close a circuit each time you press it. As it fatigues from repeated use — often after a year or more of daily clicking, sometimes sooner on cheaper switches — it can bounce, briefly breaking and remaking that connection within a few milliseconds of a single press. Your mouse's controller has no way to distinguish that bounce from a genuine second click, so it reports two. The result: a single click in a game, a file browser, or a web page unexpectedly registers as a double-click, opening something you only meant to select, or double-firing an action you only meant to trigger once.
This test isolates that exact symptom by timing the gap between consecutive left clicks and comparing it against a threshold tuned to be shorter than any deliberate human click-release-click cycle. It cannot tell you why a switch failed, only whether the timing pattern looks like a bounce.
How to get a meaningful result
- Click slowly and deliberately at first — roughly one click per second — for 15-20 clicks. This baseline should show zero chatter flags on a healthy switch.
- Click at your normal, everyday speed for another 15-20 clicks. This is the pace that matters most, since it's how you actually use the mouse.
- Watch for a pattern, not a single flag. One isolated flag can be noise; the same button flagging repeatedly across separate short test sessions is the real signal.
- Try different finger positions and pressures if you already suspect the fault — chatter can be pressure- or angle-dependent on a partially worn switch.
- Adjust the threshold if you know you can click unusually fast on purpose, so your own genuine speed isn't misread as a fault.

How many times should I click to get a reliable result?
There's no fixed number, but 20-30 single, deliberate clicks at a relaxed pace is enough to be meaningful. Chatter is intermittent by nature — a worn switch usually doesn't chatter on every press — so a handful of clicks can miss it entirely by luck. If you suspect a specific finger position or click pressure triggers it, repeat the test that way specifically.
I got one chatter flag out of fifty clicks. Is my mouse broken?
One isolated flag is worth noting but not alarming on its own — it could be a genuine early-stage switch bounce, or it could be an unusually fast intentional double-tap that happened to land under the threshold. What matters more is the pattern: does it recur across separate test sessions, does it cluster around a particular way you're pressing, and does the count of flags creep up over weeks. A single flag once is data; a recurring one is a diagnosis.
Can I test the right or middle button for chatter too?
This page's dedicated chatter button only measures left clicks, since left-click chatter is by far the most common and most disruptive real-world case. Does clicking faster on purpose count as chatter here?
Only if the gap falls under the threshold, which defaults to 35ms and is adjustable on the page. A genuinely fast intentional double-click from a human finger is realistically still tens of milliseconds apart — competitive click-speed records are measured in clicks per second, not in single gaps under 35ms. If you know you can click faster than that, lower the threshold before testing so your own fast clicks don't get misread.
What should I do if chatter shows up consistently?
Check whether the mouse is still under warranty first — switch wear is a well-known, common failure and most manufacturers treat it as a covered defect rather than user damage. Some people try cleaning the switch with contact cleaner or replacing it with a soldered-in equivalent, which can work but voids warranty and requires disassembly. Software-side click-debounce utilities exist for some mice as a workaround, but they only mask the symptom rather than fix the worn part.
