Spacebar speed test
How many times can you press the spacebar in 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 seconds? Press Space to start the clock — the first press begins the run — and get a presses-per-second score the instant it ends. Key-repeat from a held key is filtered out, so only real presses count.

How the score is worked out
The timer starts on your very first spacebar press, not on a separate Start button — that removes the extra reaction-time lag of clicking Start and then waiting for a signal before you can begin. From there, every genuine key-down adds one to the total, autorepeat from a held key is filtered out before it can inflate anything, and the instant the preset duration elapses the count is locked and divided by the duration to produce a presses-per-second figure.
Worked example. 62 presses inside a 10-second run: 62 ÷ 10 = 6.20 presses per second. The same 62 presses inside a 5-second run would read 62 ÷ 5 = 12.40 — the shorter the window, the higher the rate for the same total, which is exactly why comparing scores from different durations isn't meaningful.
Getting a faster reading
- Alternate fingers, or alternate hands entirely. A single finger tapping the same key repeatedly fatigues and slows within seconds; alternating spreads the load.
- Keep the motion small. A short, relaxed tap from the wrist is faster and more sustainable than a full-arm strike.
- Pick the duration that matches what you're actually testing. Use 5 seconds for a peak-burst number, 30 or 60 seconds if what you care about is a rate you can hold, not a rate you can flash for an instant.
- Keep the tab in the foreground. Browsers throttle background tabs, which can skew a running countdown if you switch away mid-test.
Frequently asked questions
How is presses per second calculated?
Total discrete presses divided by the preset duration in seconds. 62 presses in a 10-second run is 62 ÷ 10 = 6.20 presses per second. Holding the key doesn't add extra presses — autorepeat is filtered out before it ever reaches the counter, so the total only ever reflects genuine key-downs.
Which duration should I use for a speed test?
5 or 10 seconds if you want a peak-speed number; 30 or 60 seconds if you care about a rate you can actually sustain. Neither is the “real” score — they measure different things, and comparing a 5-second run against someone else's 60-second run isn't a fair comparison.
Does the test start when I click a button?
No — it starts on your very first spacebar press (or tap, on a touchscreen). That removes the extra reaction-time lag of clicking Start and then waiting for a signal before you can begin pressing.
