Which heart symbol should I use?
Three of these hearts are plain-text characters that predate emoji and render in whatever font is around them, not as a coloured picture: ♥ (Heart Suit, the filled playing-card symbol), ♡ (White Heart Suit, its outline), and ❣ (Heavy Heart Exclamation, a heart standing in for an exclamation mark). ❤ (Heavy Black Heart) sits in between — technically plain text, but treated as emoji-presentation by most modern systems, so it usually renders as a solid red heart by default.

What is the difference between ♥, ♡ and ❤?
They are three separate codepoints. ♥ (U+2665, Heart Suit) is the filled playing-card suit symbol. ♡ (U+2661, White Heart Suit) is its unfilled outline counterpart. ❤ (U+2764, Heavy Black Heart) is a heavier, rounder heart shape that most platforms render as a solid red heart rather than a thin card-suit glyph. All three predate emoji and work in plain text fonts; only ❤ commonly gets a colour treatment.
Which coloured heart should I use for which meaning?
There is no official rulebook, but common informal usage has settled on patterns: red for romantic love, yellow or gold for friendship, green for jealousy or nature, blue for calm or trust, purple for compassion or support, black for dark humour or mourning, white for purity or a fresh start, and brown often stands in for a coffee or pet-related warmth. Why does my pasted heart look pink instead of red, or vice versa?
The codepoint you copied is exact; the artwork is not. Every platform draws its own emoji font, so the same 💕 can render a slightly different shade or shape depending on whether the pasted text ends up rendered by Apple, Google, Microsoft or Samsung's emoji set.
Can I use a heart symbol in HTML without copying it?
Yes. ♥ can be written as the numeric reference ♥ or the named entity ♥ in HTML markup, and ❤ as ❤. That said, writing the literal UTF-8 character directly in your source file — which is what copying from this page gives you — works identically in modern browsers and is easier to read in the source.
Is there a keyboard shortcut for a heart symbol?
It depends on the platform and is inconsistent enough that most people give up on it. Windows can reach some hearts via Alt-code sequences on a numeric keypad (Alt+3 for ♥ in the legacy code page, which does not work reliably in Unicode-aware apps).
