How this date is worked out
Halloween is fixed on 31 October, the eve of All Saints' Day. The countdown resolves the next 31 October on or after today, so it rolls over on its own on 1 November and needs no annual edit. During 31 October itself it shows the time left in the day rather than a negative number.
From Samhain to All Hallows' Eve
The date has two layers. The older is Samhain, the Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest and the beginning of the darker half of the year, observed around the end of October and the start of November, and associated with a thinning of the boundary between this world and the otherworld. The newer layer is Christian: in the ninth century the Western church fixed All Saints' Day on 1 November, which made 31 October All Hallows' Eve — contracted over time to Hallowe'en and then to Halloween. The two traditions merged in Ireland and Scotland and travelled to North America with nineteenth-century emigrants, where the modern secular holiday took shape.
Where the traditions come from
- Jack-o'-lanterns. Irish and Scottish carving of turnips and mangel beetroots into lanterns, tied to the legend of Stingy Jack. Pumpkins were an American substitution: bigger, softer and far easier to carve.
- Trick-or-treating. Descended from souling, in which the poor went door to door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for soul cakes, and from Scottish guising, where children performed a song or a joke to earn their treat. The phrase "trick or treat" is recorded in North America from the 1920s and became near-universal after the Second World War.
- Costumes. Originally a disguise, on the logic that if the dead were walking abroad it was safer not to be recognisable.
- Apple bobbing. A survival of harvest games and of divination rituals that were supposed to reveal who you would marry.
A fixed date with a moving weekday
Unlike Thanksgiving or Black Friday, Halloween is not pinned to a weekday, so it lands wherever the calendar puts it. That has real consequences: when 31 October falls midweek, many communities move trick-or-treating to the nearest Saturday and parties to the weekend before, and there are periodic campaigns to fix the holiday to the last Saturday in October outright. Nothing has come of them. The table below tells you which years to worry about.
Halloween is also one of the biggest retail events of the year outside Christmas, with consumer spending in the United States running into the billions across costumes, sweets and decorations, and a decorating season that now begins in earnest in September.
