How this date is worked out
1 January, fixed, resolved as the next occurrence on or after today. The countdown reaches zero at midnight where you are — the same moment the new year arrives — then shows the time remaining in the day and rolls forward on 2 January.
Why the year starts in January
It is a Roman decision, and it was contested for well over a thousand years afterwards. Julius Caesar's calendar reform of 46 BC fixed 1 January as the start of the year, aligning it with the day Roman consuls took office. Medieval Christian Europe was uncomfortable with a date carrying so much pagan association and largely abandoned it: different regions began their year on 25 March (Lady Day, the Annunciation), on Christmas Day, or at Easter, which has the distinction of being a start date that moves.
The return to January came with the Gregorian reform of 1582 and was adopted piecemeal. Britain and its colonies were among the last holdouts in western Europe: until 1752 the English legal year began on 25 March, which is why documents from that era sometimes carry double-dated years such as "1750/51" for dates between January and March. The Calendar (New Style) Act 1750 moved the start of the year to 1 January and dropped eleven days from September 1752 to catch up with the continent.
Plenty of calendars still disagree, entirely reasonably. The Chinese New Year falls on a new moon between 21 January and 20 February; the Islamic new year moves through the Gregorian year because the Hijri calendar is purely lunar; Rosh Hashanah falls in September or October; Nowruz is at the March equinox; and the Ethiopian new year, Enkutatash, is in September.
Resolutions, and why they fail on schedule
The custom is old. Babylonians made promises to their gods at the Akitu festival, and Romans made vows to Janus, the two-faced god of doorways who gives January its name and looks both backwards and forwards. The modern research is less romantic: studies of resolution-keeping consistently find that a large majority are abandoned within a few months, with the steepest drop-off in the second half of January. The interventions that appear to help are the dull ones — a specific measurable goal rather than a vague intention, a plan for the predictable obstacle, and someone who will notice whether you did it.

1 January is a public holiday in almost every country in the world. Where it falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, many countries grant a substitute day on the following Monday — standard practice in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, among others. When exactly does the countdown hit zero?
At midnight local time on 1 January, as your calendar turns. After that it shows the time remaining in New Year’s Day itself and then begins counting to the following year.
What about Chinese New Year?
It follows a lunisolar calendar and falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February, so it is a different date each year and is not covered by this page. Use the custom countdown with the date for the year you need.
